South Cumbria River Trust – Bannisdale

An aerial photograph showing the route of the re-meandered beck

I have had the very great pleasure of working with South Cumbria Rivers Trust to document the development of three river restoration projects since July 2018. The first project I started recording is in a valley to the north of Kendal. Bannisdale Beck feeds into the River Mint which then joins the River Kent which flows through Kendal. The beck had been straightened in the distant past to create a large grazing field but work in 2018 re-meandered the stream which, coupled with extensive tree planting, should contribute significantly to natural flood management and greater biodiversity in the area. The film above merges the flyover from the four visits I have made, showing the before, during and after of the work, and finally how it looks now the river has settled and found its own course three years later in August 2021. A big thank you to Peter Evoy and Ian McMurdo for allowing me to be involved in documenting this project.
