Art Gene approached me to produce a short film to document this art project that they were involved in with the University of Central Lancashire and others. Working with artist Katie Anderson, pupils from Furness Academy explored issues around sustainability and gave voice to their concerns through slogans and images produced as t-shirts. The project culminated in a procession to the town hall to present their “views” to the mayor and the lead councillor for climate change. The pupils wore the t-shirts whilst carrying the banners that Katie had made for the occasion. The children were given a tour of the town hall and cake was eaten as a fitting end to the project.
I love the process of screen-printing so I couldn’t help lingering on the hard work that went into designing and printing the t-shirts on a really intensive day of creativity. Furness Academy can be very proud of the students’ attitude and application throughout the project. They showed themselves to be Voices of the Future that deserve to be listened to.
