Sweden Wood belongs to The Friends of the Lake District and is a shortish walk up from Ambleside. I saw bluebells and primroses on my visit but there are unexpected elements to the wood, as there is evidence of terracing and non-native tree-planting thought to date from Victorian times. It is quite steep, sloping down to Scandale Beck, with lots of different micro-habitats within the site. There are also great views from the highest point towards Ambleside and Lake Windermere to the south and the Lake District hills to the north.
Virtual tours are an excellent way of exploring and interacting with the landscapes owned by the Friends of the Lake District. This can prepare you for visiting in person or replace the experience if it is not possible for you to visit. You can choose what order you wish to explore the points of interest. I get tremendous enjoyment from putting these tours together.
