Yorkshire Dale Millennium Trust – Long Preston Floodplain Tour

This has been a major project covering a large tract of landscape, as the floodplain in this area near to Long Preston has been restored by Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust in conjunction with all the landowners in the valley. It is a significant area used by many wading birds in winter and it is hoped biodiversity will increase as the landscape diversifies. The Ribble Way long distance footpath stays quite low in the valley and so there are not many viewpoints to take in the breadth of the floodplain, but the view from the drone reveals so much about how the river meanders and where it can spill out into the fields either side.

Virtual tours are an excellent way of exploring and interacting with areas of landscape. This can prepare you for visiting in person or replace the experience if it is not possible for you to visit. You can choose what order you wish to explore the points of interest. I get tremendous enjoyment from putting these tours together.

I am grateful for Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust asking me to be involved in documenting this land restoration. Yet again it is a project in a new area that I have enjoyed getting to know and from which I have learnt so much from the experts I have connected with. Below are a selection of photos that immediately show how the landscape opens up as the camera rises. Click on the photos to show at a larger size.
